Coombe Hill is the highest viewpoint in the Chilterns, and on a clear day the Vale of Aylesbury stretches out below it in a way that stops you mid-stride. This circular route from the Whiteleaf Cross car park takes in Beacon Hill, the Ridgeway National Trail, Whiteleaf Hill and the Icknield Way before climbing to the monument at the summit. Rolling hills, ancient paths and some of the most open walking in Buckinghamshire.

It’s Boxing Day, and it’s going to be a busy one. The family are coming over for a late afternoon lunch, and I’ve already done the mental arithmetic. There’s just enough of a window for Elvis and me to get a morning walk in and still be back in time to help get things ready. Nothing ambitious — just one of our familiar loops from the doorstep. The forecast looks right for the kind of photographs I’m drawn to. Cloudy with sunny spells, a slight chill in the air, perfect walking weather. As we leave the house and head towards Wooburn Park, the village begins to quieten behind us. Some walks feel like routines, others like journeys. This one sits somewhere in between — familiar enough to feel welcoming, yet varied enough to keep surprising you each time you set out.
