If you've spent any time on this site, you'll know what it's about. The Chilterns. The footpaths. The hedgerows, the churches, the fields in every season and every weather. Black and white, minimal editing, no fuss. That won't change — the English countryside is where this site began and it remains the heart of everything I do here.
I'm a black and white photographer first, and a countryside photographer second. The countryside is where I spend most of my time, where I feel most at home with a camera, and where the majority of my work lives. It was never, however, the whole story.
Photography for me has always been about walking. Moving through a place slowly, deliberately, without an agenda. Letting the landscape — or whatever happens to be around me — do the talking. I photograph what catches my attention. A gate, a shadow, a worn path through a field. The kind of thing most people walk straight past without a second glance. That approach didn't start in the Chilterns and it doesn't stop there either. It's just how I see.
Black and White Street and Travel Photography — A Natural Extension
Over the years, the camera has come with me everywhere. Villages, market towns, the occasional city. Trips abroad when life and circumstances allow. And the work from those places has always existed — sitting on hard drives, quietly waiting. I never had a proper home for it on this site, so it never appeared here. That always felt like a waste.
As a natural evolution of what I've built, I've decided to change that. A new section — Home & Away — will sit within the galleries and give that work somewhere to live. It will feature older unseen projects alongside new work as it happens. Street photography, travel photography — call it what you want — but shot with exactly the same mentality I bring to the countryside. Walking. Noticing. Looking for the different within the indifferent. Same approach, same black and white, just a different scene under my feet.
This isn't a change of direction. It isn't the site suddenly becoming something else. The English countryside — the Chilterns in particular — remains the core of Walking With Pics and always will. Home & Away sits alongside that work, not in front of it. Think of it as a side room rather than a new building. The main gallery is still where you'll find the bulk of what I do. But if you wander into the side room, I think you'll find the work feels familiar. Same eye, same light, same way of moving through my black and white world.
I'm genuinely proud of what this site has become over time. It's grown in ways I didn't entirely predict, and it keeps evolving — because I keep evolving as a photographer and as a writer. That feels right. Standing still has never been my style, on a footpath or anywhere else.
Elvis is still here too, before anyone asks. He comes with me around the villages more than anywhere else — different smells to investigate, something new to wee on, more people to stop and make a fuss of him. He doesn't change. Some things are reassuringly constant.
